Planning a wedding is a big undertaking. Planning a destination wedding from out of province or country adds an entirely new layer of complexity.
And yet, more couples than ever are choosing Alberta wedding destinations thanks to the iconic Rocky Mountains, elevated venues, and unrivalled guest experience.
So how do you plan a seamless, stress-free destination wedding when you’re not local? Here’s exactly what you need to know.

Why Couples Are Choosing Alberta Wedding Destinations
Before diving into logistics, it’s worth understanding why Alberta continues to lead as one of Canada’s top destination wedding regions.
Alberta offers a rare combination:
- Iconic Rocky Mountain scenery
- Easy access via Calgary International Airport
- Low provincial taxes make for an affordable investment
But despite the perks, planning a wedding remotely comes with logistical challenges that local couples don’t have to contend with, from touring venues virtually to coordinating with multiple vendors in different time zones and navigating unfamiliar locations and regulations.
Without the right support, wedding planning can quickly become overwhelming.
The good news? These challenges are entirely avoidable with the right people in your corner.
Step 1: Choose the Right Alberta Wedding Destination First
When planning remotely, location and venue selection matter more than anything else. Not all Alberta wedding destinations offer the same level of accessibility or support.
When evaluating locations, consider:
- Travel convenience for guests (proximity to Calgary is key for the mountains)
- Accommodation availability nearby
- Weather flexibility (indoor/outdoor options)
- Local vendor availability
Speaking of the mountains, while Banff is world-famous, it often comes with higher costs (especially for guest accommodation), more restrictions due to its status as a National Park, and limited flexibility due to high demand (you’ll want to book at least 1.5 years in advance).
Destinations like Canmore offer comparable mountain views, better affordability, and more flexibility in venue design and experience.

Step 2: Prioritize All-Inclusive or All-in-One Venues
If you’re planning from out of province, your venue will become the single most important decision you’ll make. When doing your research, be sure to check what each venue includes for setup, teardown, and decor, as these items can become more complicated when travelling for your wedding.
Better yet, keep an eye out for all-in-one venues that offer built-in planning support, in-house catering and decor offerings, local vendor partnerships, and streamlined communication (hint: that’s us). This way, instead of managing 10+ vendors, you’re working with one experienced team that understands how destination weddings function.
At Cornerstone Weddings, our goal is to be a one-stop wedding shop. Not only do we provide a dedicated Wedding Coordinator who will help plan and orchestrate your wedding (with unlimited communication), we also take care of all setup and teardown (including your personal decor), and provide in-house dining, decor, and DJ services. Ultimately, all you have to do is show up when you book a wedding with us.
One of the biggest mistakes couples make when planning remotely? Trying to recreate a fully customized, local-style wedding from afar. Our structure allows you to plan a wedding with the customized look and feel of a traditional, local wedding, and the ease that removes logistical obstacles.
Step 3: Schedule One (Strategic) Planning Visit
You don’t need multiple trips to plan a destination wedding. In fact, most couples only need one well-planned visit.
Not only do we offer virtual venue tours, hosted by one of our Wedding Coordinators, but we also provide a Food Tasting and Planning Meeting as part of your investment. That means even if you book the venue sight unseen, you’ll have an extensive day of planning on-site to check off your wedding to-do list (and meet with other vendors if you choose to).
During this meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to sit down with your assigned Coordinator to discuss layout, seating arrangements, and decor. Our chef will also provide you with a selection of menu items to taste so you can choose your dream menu.

Real Experiences: Planning From Out of Province
When done right, planning a destination wedding in Alberta can actually feel easier than planning locally. But don’t take it from us, take it from our couples:
“Cornerstone Weddings was a dream to work with! Their one-stop shop made our wedding planning seamless and stress-free from start to finish. The setup was everything I could’ve dreamed of. Our guests raved about the incredible food, the super fun Photo Booth, the candy bar and even the late-night poutine bar. Even our Québécois friends loved it!” – Sarah Brazeau
“We flew in from Ontario to get married here. Right from the moment I reached out to Cornerstone about doing our wedding with them, I was met with just fantastic customer service. Planning a wedding in a totally different province was complicated at times; however, through it all, our Coordinator kept us on track and organized.” – Kathryn Boyes
“Living in Vancouver, we were looking for a venue that would make the planning process easy, and Cornerstone did just that, with plenty of food, drinks and decor packages to pick from that we could customize to our needs. We had a very particular vision for our decor, and Jade and the team executed the setup flawlessly, accommodating all of our little requests.” – Bronte and Braeden Stang
